We’ve invited two awardees from previous editions to share their experiences and offer a candid insight for artists who are thinking about applying this year. Alejandra Carles-Tolra (Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 2) and Silvia Rosi (Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 3) reflect on the application and selection process, the reality of creating their commissions and the impact of the award on their practice.
The artists are joined by Harriet Cooper, Head of Visual Arts at Jerwood Arts and Julia Bunnemann, Curator at Photoworks who will be on the selection panel for the fourth edition of the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards.
The panel share their thoughts and top tips for applying and answer questions.
What are the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards?
The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards are a major commissioning opportunity supporting early-career artists working with photography to make new work and significantly develop their practice. They particularly seek to encourage artists exploring new approaches to photography. Now in their fourth edition, the Awards are for UK-based artists who are between one and ten years into their practice to realise ambitious new works for a national touring exhibition.
Two artists will receive a £15,000 award each (comprising £10,000 fee and £5,000 production budget) with a full package of support from Photoworks and Jerwood Arts to create new work over a 12-month period.

Alejandra Carles-Tolra
b.1988, Barcelona, Spain, Carles-Tolra is a visual artist and educator based in London. Questions regarding what defines our identities and the role the group plays in our search for belonging drives her work. She holds an MFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BA in Sociology from the University of Barcelona. Her work is part of the Arts Council Collection and the Col·lecció Nacional de Fotografia of Catalunya, and it has been published and exhibited internationally. Most recently at Photo Miyota Japan (2019), Somerset House (2019), the Finnish Museum of Photography (2019), Benaki Museum in Athens (2019), FotoFever Fair in Paris (2019), and the Wuhan Art Museum in China (2018). As an educator she has worked for institutions such as Autograph, The Photographer’s Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery designing and delivering participatory photography workshops. alejandractr.com
Silvia Rosi
b.1992 Scandiano, Rosi is an Italian artist living and working between London and Modena. She graduated from London College of Communication in 2016 with a BA (Hons) in Photography. Her work explores her personal family history drawing on her Togolaise heritage. She works with photography, video and text. Recent exhibitions include Small is Beautiful XXXVIII at Flowers Gallery and Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. She is the 2020 recipient of the Jerwood/Photoworks Award. silviarosi.com
