The Writer in Residence programme provides valuable paid publishing opportunities online and in print for outstanding arts writers. It is open, inviting resident writers to engage with the programme as they choose and with the aim of publishing thoughts and essays that open up wider contextual debate surrounding the issues and themes explored through Jerwood Visual Arts projects. This writing provides featured artists with much-valued critical reflection and context on their work and exhibitions.
Philomena Epps
Philomena is a writer and publisher based in London. After completing a BA in English Literature at the University of Sussex, she went on to undertake an MA in History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art, with an academic focus on feminism, identity politics and war. She is the founder and editor of the magazine Orlando. Philomena recently contributed a series of case studies to the AHRC funded research project Performance at Tate: Collecting Archiving and Sharing Performance and the Performative. During this period, she also wrote online summaries for works in the Tate Collection. Her catalogue essay The Personal and the Political: Jo Spence and the Day of the Dead was published by Ridinghouse in their 2013 monograph, Jo Spence: The Final Project. Philomena has contributed features to a selection of online publications, including Dazed, Imperica, Photomonitor, Sleek Magazine and this is tomorrow. She is also a London contributor for ArtForum’s ‘Critics’ Picks’.
Kathryn Lloyd
Kathryn is an artist and writer based in London. She studied MA Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, and completed The Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in 2013. She has contributed to various arts publications including: Art Monthly, Aesthetica, E.R.O.S. Journal, Scottish Art News, and this is tomorrow for which she also works as a Researcher. Recent commissions include catalogue texts for solo exhibitions by artists Leon Pozniakow and Ian Giles. Lloyd is also a founding member of Line Magazine and the Line Collective, formed in Edinburgh in 2010.
Tom Overton
Tom’s writing has been published by the New Statesman, Apollo, White Review, Various Small Fires, Tate, the British Council and others, and he has curated exhibitions at King’s Cultural Institute, Somerset House and the Whitechapel Gallery. After cataloguing John Berger’s archive at the British Library as part of a PhD, he edited a two-volume collection of Berger’s writing about art as a Research Fellow of the Henry Moore Institute and Centre for Life-writing Research at King’s College London. The first volume, Portraits, will be published in October 2015 by Verso Books. Tom’s residency extended into 2016.
Lizzie Hommersham
Lizzie Homersham is a writer, and Editorial and Marketing Assistant at Book Works. She has written for Art Monthly, Rhizome and Frieze, and has contributed, in a curatorial or production assistant capacity, to a number of live, video and online projects, including the Serpentine Galleries’ inaugural digital commission. She is 1/8th of the writing and editing collective producing a new magazine titled A-or-ist – ‘A place for the elsewhere unfinished or otherwise disallowed’. Lizzie’s residency extended into 2016.
