The Writer in Residence programme provides valuable paid publishing opportunities online and in print for outstanding arts writers. It is open, inviting resident writers to engage with the programme as they choose and with the aim of publishing thoughts and essays that open up wider contextual debate surrounding the issues and themes explored through Jerwood Visual Arts projects. This writing provides featured artists with much-valued critical reflection and context on their work and exhibitions.
Shama Khanna
Shama Khanna is an independent curator and writer based in London. She curated the thematic programme at Oberhausen International Short Film Festival 2013, entitled Flatness: Cinema after the Internet which she developed into the online platform flatness.eu. She has previously worked with Showroom Gallery, E:vent, BFI London Film Festival and LUX / ICA Biennial of Moving Images in London and Western Front, Vancouver, amongst other collaborations including events at Chisenhale Gallery and Tate, London and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. She is a regular contributor to frieze, Art Agenda and Art Review magazines and is a visiting lecturer at Goldsmiths, Central St. Martins, Chelsea Colleges and Bournemouth Arts University in the UK.
Shama’s residency responded to Jerwood/FVU Awards 2014: ‘What Will They See of Me?’ (12 March – 27 April 2014) and Jerwood Encounters:TTTT (14 May – 22 June 2014)
Basia Lewandowska Cummings
Basia Lewandowska Cummings is a writer, editor and film curator based in London. She is a contributor to Frieze, The Wire, The Quietus and Sight & Sound, and recently published a short publication, Four Ways to Read the Cut, on film editing and experimentation in sound and cinema.
Basia Lewandowska Cummings was the tenth Jerwood Visual Arts Writer In Residence and responded to the Jerwood Open Forest (15 January – 23 February) and Jerwood Makers Open (9 July – 31 August).
Patrick Langley
Patrick Langley is a writer and occasional radio producer who lives in London. A contributing editor at The White Review, his work has appeared frieze, the Times Literary Supplement, BBC Radio 3 and Resonance FM. He co-runs CAR, an arts podcast.
Patrick will be contributed to the Writer in Residence blog from September – December 2014, which covered the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2014; Jerwood Encounters: Suspicion, an exhibition curated by Dan Coombs and Rhys Coren: If We Can Dance Together in the Project Space.
