Somerset House

Sonic Terrains

Somerset House is London’s working arts centre and home to the UK’s largest creative community. Dedicated to nurturing creativity and empowering ideas, its programme is ambitious in scope; its neo-classical backdrop showcases ground-breaking contemporary culture, connecting artists and audiences to new ideas and the people behind them. A transformational experience for five artists to develop expertise in spatial sound and work at the forefront of this new immersive sound technology

Current innovations in spatial sound and immersive listening offer exciting new possibilities for audiences and performers in terms of how we experience and produce sound and music. Sonic Terrains is the first programme of its kind in the UK and is designed to give artists space, time and budget to think, experiment and develop new ideas in this innovative space while working remotely in the current climate.

The programme is a collaboration between Somerset House Studios and residents Call & Response, whose state-of-the-art spatial sound studio is based at Somerset House. Each artist will be supported remotely initially to make an ambitious new spatial sound work, with dedicated time in the studio later in the summer.

The artists taking part are Kelman Duran, Lafawndah, Loraine James, Ben Vince and Zadie Xa.

All five works will premiere online as part of a special online edition of Assembly in September 2020.
