AND creates a space where artists can reflect on and play with the impact of new technologies, acting as a catalyst for new approaches to art-making and digital invention. It commissions ground breaking projects which challenge the definitions of art and moving image; develops projects which abandon traditional settings and partnerships; and brings together an eclectic mix of academics, filmmakers, scientists and anarchists to actively push the boundaries of audience experience and arts production.
Our support is for the commissioning of seven new works as the inaugural part of the three year project Digital Dark Ages. The exhibition seeks to understand how to capture, store and preserve digital art in humorous, provocative and practical ways. The works will stimulate thinking around these issues and will be presented in one of several cave networks in the Peak District, framing the concepts of digital and geological time together. The commissioned artists are: Charlotte Jarvis, Sam Lavigne, Martha McGuinn, Simone Niquille, Nora Al-Badri, Jan Nikolai Nelles, Thomas Thwaites, and Shift Register (Jamie Allen and Martin Howse).
