We are delighted to open applications to our Jerwood Writer in Residence 2022 programme, an opportunity for UK-based early-career visual arts writers to develop their practice. There are two 6-month residency opportunities in 2022 where writers are invited to produce up to five new critical responses to both Jerwood Arts’ Exhibitions and Events programme at Jerwood Space in London, and Jerwood Arts’ wider work.
The residencies are aimed at visual arts writers who are seeking an opportunity to explore their experimental critical voice and have their practice engaged with across Jerwood Arts’ audience and extended networks. Responses are self-directed and developed in dialogue with the Jerwood Arts team. They are hosted on the Writing and Media pages on the Jerwood Arts website and shared through our social media channels.
As part of the residency there is a small production budget to enable writers to disseminate their work, thinking and research further in dialogue with the Jerwood Arts team. For example, this could be used to support an event, to print a small leaflet publication, to create digital or audio content, or for other activity identified by the writer. Each writer also has a budget for mentoring sessions during their residency and will be supported by the Jerwood Arts team to identify potential mentors to help them develop their practice.
The two selected writers will each receive:
- £1,500 fee
- £500 production budget to disseminate thinking and research through means of either an event, DIY publication, video recording, podcast or other activity
- £300 budget for mentoring
- Editorial support from the Jerwood Arts team
- Publishing through the Writing and Media section of the Jerwood Arts website

Applicants must be living and working in the UK and be outside of formal education at the time of application and during the length of their residency.
