Open to the public until 22 January 2023, the presentation in Leeds introduces new elements to the commissions by awardees Soojin Chang and Michael., building on their exhibition at Jerwood Space earlier this year.
Michael. presents his moving-image triptych cleave to the BLACK and has co-curated an exhibition of artworks from Leeds Art Gallery’s collection, responding to themes in his work which ask the question ‘what would it be like to live on a land that loves you back?’. It includes work by artists Helen Chadwick, John Constable, Tacita Dean, Hamish Fulton, Runa Islam, Richard Long and Veronica Ryan, presented alongside a new sound work by artist and collaborator Ashley Holmes.
Soojin Chang premieres Sacrifice to the Seaworm (2022), a new multi-part film installation featuring a reading, a purification rite, and a burial mound. This work was formed collaboratively between Soojin, Tenzin Mingyur Paldron (writer) and Jade O’Belle (artist) and the installation is created with specimens borrowed from the Natural Science Collections at Leeds Museums & Galleries.
Soojin’s Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 commission BXBY is exhibited off-site at the Project Space in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds – hosted by the Centre for Audio Visual Experimentation (CAVE). It will be on display until Sunday 4 December 2022, and Soojin will be giving a Visiting Artist’s Talk on Monday 5 December 2022, details can be found here.
The Leeds iteration of the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 marks the final edition of the awards in its present form after ten years of commissioning early-career artists. The awards have established an esteemed role in the contemporary visual arts, by awarding £25,000 for artists to develop new artworks at a pivotal moment in their practice. Selection of the awards this year was made by a panel of experts, including award-winning visual artists Hetain Patel and Rehana Zaman.
