The Jerwood/FVU Awards are a major opportunity for moving-image artists in the first five years of their practice, a collaboration between Jerwood Arts and FVU. The Awards support early-career moving-image artists and focus on practical, developmental support where the nurturing of ideas and expertise is consolidated by substantial production opportunities.
The national call for entries invites artists to make proposals for ambitious new works in any form of the moving-image, two of which are selected by an expert panel consisting of practicing artists and arts programmers/curators. The selected artists receive an award of £25,000 each which is used to provide an artist fee and a budget to create their proposed artworks. Each recipient also receives full production support from FVU over a 14-month period to make these significant new works for a national touring exhibition.
We launched this initiative in 2011 in response to a need for significant major commissions for early-career moving-image artists, who are at an unproven stage in their practice. Through its history the Awards have contributed to an ongoing dialogue around urgent or timely concerns within moving-image through the curatorial theme and commissioned works. This, and the element of risk in working with artists who are at an early stage in their practice, sets the Awards apart from other opportunities in the moving-image field.
The Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 returns to a biennial model following five annual editions, allowing artists a longer production period to fulfil the ambition of their proposals.
The commissioned works will launch outside of London for the first time, with the premiere taking place at the prestigious Leeds Art Gallery in January 2022, before travelling to Jerwood Arts, London in April 2022. This new partnership with Leeds Art Gallery represents an exciting new chapter for the Awards, providing awarded artists opportunities to connect with audiences across Yorkshire, alongside a programme of events and outreach work promoting deepened relationships with Yorkshire-based artists.
We are open for applications until 1pm, Monday 20 July. Find out more and apply here.
