Now in its second year, the Jerwood Arts / FACT Fellowship emerged from FACT’s ongoing commitment to nurturing a diverse new generation of emerging artists, curators, technologists, and cultural activists. The fellowship received applications from over 200 creatives.
The Fellows will take part in a hybrid residency (a mixture of in-person stays in Liverpool and online) to research and develop their initial proposal, with outcomes presented at FACT in Summer / Autumn 2022. They will be responding to FACT’s Radical Ancestry, a programme of exhibitions, projects, residencies, and events that look at how our sense of self is shaped by the histories, geographies, biology, and culture we inherit, and question how technology can help us to explore a new way of thinking and experimenting with who we are.
During this time, Fellows will receive bespoke training, mentoring, crits, and production / research support from the team at FACT, the other fellows, and an invited selection of their wider collaborators consisting of artists, curators, and researchers. The selected artists were chosen by a panel of: Carrie Chan (Curator in Residence, FACT) Maitreyi Maheshwari (Head of Programme, FACT) and Charlotte Horn (Senior Producer, FACT).
The awarded Fellows are:
Ashley Holmes (Sheffield, UK)
Lucy Hutchinson (London and Lancashire, UK)
April Lin 林森 (London, UK and Stockholm, Sweden)
Carrie Chan, curator in residence and panel member said, “I am impressed by how the selected artists for the Jerwood / FACT Digital Fellowship have shown determination in challenging established knowledge systems and histories through exploring alternative realities, avatars as well as personal archives. Their distinctive proposals demonstrate a variety of interactive approaches in using digital technologies for reclaiming histories and engaging with the communities in Liverpool.“
FACT stands for Film, Art and Creative Technology. Imagined and made in Liverpool, it commissions internationally exceptional art, science and technology projects that radically explore society and its most pressing issues. In 2018/19, it worked with 88 artists, hosted 21 international residencies and welcomed circa 250,000 visitors to its building. FACT collaborates with over 10,000 adults and young people through its Learning Programme every year, which it delivers in partnership with schools and community organisations across Liverpool City Region.
Launching at FACT’s inaugural Assembly in Spring 2020, the Jerwood FACT Fellowship Programme is at the heart of its commitment to providing meaningful, career-enhancing opportunities for trans-disciplinary artists, film-makers, creative technologists and critical thinkers. Jerwood Arts’ Development Programme Fund will support the first two years of the programme, six Fellows in total.
