Three early-career singers have been selected for the next iteration of The Jerwood Young Artists programme at Glyndebourne, enabling them to work with leading conductors, directors, choreographers, theatre specialists and vocal coaches to enhance their skills and experience.
The 2023 Jerwood Young Artists are:
Annabel Kennedy, a mezzo-soprano from Devon, is part of the Royal College of Music’s International Opera Studio as a Siow-Furniss Scholar supported by the Sir Gordon Palmer Scholarship, under the tutelage of Amanda Roocroft and Caroline Dowdle. Alongside a Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist for 2023, Annabel is a Samling Artist and a Britten Pears Young Artist for 2022-2023.
Michael Ronan, a Northumbrian bass-baritone, is an up-and-coming artist praised for his ‘commanding voice and stage presence’ (Evening Standard). He has recently finished a season at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and is currently a member of Royal Academy Opera (RAO) where he is the proud recipient of the Sainsbury Award and is generously supported by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust.
Jamie Woollard, a British bass, is studying at the Royal College of Music Opera Studio, where he is taught by Graeme Broadbent, and will graduate in July 2023. Jamie is a Samling Artist and the Stephen Catto Memorial Scholar at the RCM where he has performed numerous roles, and will next perform Il Re in Respighi’s La bella dormente nel bosco in March 2023.
Glyndebourne has run Jerwood Young Artists since 2010, a programme focused on nurturing talented opera singers. The opportunity provides career-changing support and professional development to up to four aspiring soloists over a full festival season from April to August.
Each of the young singers come to Glyndebourne as choristers with very little or no experience of performing for a leading UK opera company. It is the programme’s aim to transform their trajectory from choristers to emerging solo artists that have the skills and experience to go on to have successful careers in the UK and internationally.
