In Paul’s work architecture and objects are fragmented and reassembled into installations that seek to emphasize how images act as objects, and how objects survive in images. The work blurs the reality of objects and their dissemination as images. Recent work has explored ideas of authenticity and standardisation through contemporary reproductions of Modernist Live Edge furniture, and comprised sculptural works alongside appropriated imagery. This work was presented in a group exhibition in 2018 and a subsequent solo exhibition in 2019.
Paul’s Jerwood Bursary will fund early-stage research for a project exploring the ideology of the archetypal image of the English countryside and its construction through architecture and design. Paul will make site visits to take photographs and gather material documentation, and also undertake technical training in wood carving.
